Success in karting, Formula Ford (1977 British Formula Ford Champion) and Formula 3 brought Nigel Mansell to the attention of Colin Chapman. After a successful test in 1979, Nigel joined the team and became close friends with Chapman, finding they had much in common; dogged determination, single-minded and a passion to succeed. When Colin passed away at the end of 1982, Lotus under the management of Peter Warr would bring few successes, but enough for Nigel to come to an agreement with Frank Williams, Nigel’s vacant seat at Lotus would be filled by rising star, and future rival, Ayrton Senna.
